EASTERN EARLY MUSIC FORUM

Heinrich Schütz

'Unser Gott ist im Himmel'

Saturday 16 June 2012, 10.30 – 17.00

Unitarian Meeting House, Churchgate Street, Bury St. Edmunds IP33 1RH

Tutor:  Peter Syrus

Heinrich Schütz is one of the great names from the early German Baroque, and this workshop contrasts music from two of his most important collections.

Psalmen Davids of 1619 shows the influence of his studies with Giovanni Gabrieli, and there will be items for two and three choirs of voices and instruments, including “Ach Herr, straf mich nicht” and “Nicht uns Herr, sondern deinem Namen”. In Geistliche Chor-Music (1648) Schütz returns more to his Germanic roots and the music is less immediately extrovert. Yet variety is certainly there, whether in the simple yet hauntingly beautiful “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt”, the warring energy of “Verleih uns Frieden”, or the joyous dancing of “Die Himmel erzählen”.

The workshop is for singers (all voice ranges), and players of cornetts, sackbuts, curtals, and violins (2).  Pitch is A = 440. Singers: all items will be sung in German, and some familiarity with it, both pronunciation and meaning, would certainly be helpful, though is not essential!

Peter is a tutor in historical studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.  He is in demand for practical vacation, weekend and one-day courses, working with singers and instrumentalists on music from the 14th - 17th centuries.

The workshop will begin at 10 am for 10.30 and we will finish around 5pm.  The Unitarian Meeting House is a venue which we have used before, with a warm and mellow acoustic.  It is in the centre of Bury:  there is no parking nearby but there are car parks within reasonable walking distance.

Coffee, tea, and biscuits will be available on arrival, and tea and cake will be provided in the afternoon, but no lunch:  there are many pubs and cafes close by (but allow for tourists and Saturday Market!), or bring your own packed lunch.

The cost of the workshop is £18 for members of EEMF and other Early Music forums, and £20 for non-members (Note: the annual subscription for EEMF is only £6!).  To apply please complete the attached slip and return it with a cheque (made payable to EEMF), to Mike Feinson, 20 Bederic Close, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk IP32 7DR (email: Germanworkshop@eemf.org.uk; tel: 01284 701410).  Please include a stamped addressed envelope if you require acknowledgement and/or directions.  Details of lifts wanted/offered will be circulated to attendees before the event.  Please post your booking form by June 7.
