Michael Procter

Michael Procter died suddenly on 3 May 2012. He was found dead at his home in Germany, after he had been packing up music for his next course in Venice.

Michael directed many weekends of polyphonic music for EEMF and other organisations, and enabled us to sing wonderful Renaissance music liturgically in a way that is very rare. He also ran a successful music publishing business. He was an inspirational example in his successful fight against cancer; having been told that he would never be able to raise his arms again, he went on to make a career of conducting.

We are very sorry to lose such a great and lovely man, and we send our sympathies to his wife Claudia and the family.

Memorial Service

A service in memory of Michael Procter was held at the ‘musicians’ church’, St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, London, at 6pm on Friday 2nd November 2012.  Many EEMF members attended the service, which was led by Peter Sutton. The Renaissance Singers, groups from TVEMF and EEMF, and the Proctet each sang movements of Victoria’s 6-part mass Officium Defunctorum or a motet, and there were moving spoken tributes including one from Michael’s son Benedict; donations for his university education will be very welcome: see the message below.  Michael’s colleague Keith Bennett conducted, and Clifton Hughes was organist for MP’s favourite hymn, “The duteous day now closeth”.

Fund for Benedict

I have updated the web page www.michael-procter.com/fund.html with details of a UK bank account to pool donations before transferring them to the account in
Germany. This account is not used for anything else.

Robin Rigby
