EITH Briggs is to be complimented on organising
a very interesting choral and instrumental workshop. We were fortunate indeed
that he obtained Peter Leech to lead it. Peter's direction was clear and
effective. His learning was worn lightly, but informed his conducting
profoundly. His evident expertise and experience, vocal and instrumental, was a
great help to the participants.
THE works studied (sadly we had to leave
before the final session) included:
Ich elender Mensch, BWV48
Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt, BWV112
Christ lag in Todes Banden, BWV4
Bleib bei uns, BWV6
Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV61
PETER'S specialist knowledge of Lutheran
sermons and of the importance of oratory and rhetoric gave us a better
understanding of why Bach's sacred music takes the forms that it does.
